# Shopify Non-Plus Stores: Your Google Tag Migration Deadline Is 26 August. Here Is Exactly What Breaks If You Miss It

> Non-Plus Shopify stores have until 26 August 2026 to migrate Google tags to the Google & YouTube app and upgrade their Thank you and Order status pages. Google's documentation is explicit that you must migrate your tags before upgrading those pages, because doing it the other way round breaks your tracking. If you miss the deadline entirely, Shopify applies what Google calls critical limitations to stores that have not migrated.

## Key takeaways

- The deadline for non-Plus stores is 26 August 2026. Shopify Plus merchants had an earlier one, 28 August 2025, so if you are on Plus this should already be done.
- Order matters more than the date. Google states you must migrate tagging to the Google & YouTube app before upgrading your Thank you and Order status pages. Reversing that sequence breaks tags.
- Google Tag Manager is not supported on Shopify. Google's documentation says you cannot set up GTM through the app and should move Google tags out of Tag Manager containers entirely.
- "I did nothing and it still works" is not proof you are safe. Stores that missed a February 2025 Analytics cutoff had their tag auto-converted to a custom pixel, which Google describes as a degraded setup it cannot support.

if you run a non-Plus Shopify store, the Shopify Google tag migration deadline is 26 August 2026. By that date you need to move your Google tags into the Google & YouTube app and upgrade your Thank you and Order status pages. Miss it and Shopify applies limitations to your store. But the more common failure is not missing the date at all. It is doing the two steps in the wrong order and quietly losing your conversion data while everything appears to be working.

That sequencing detail is the single most important thing in this post, so let us deal with it first.

## The order is not optional

Google's documentation states it plainly: to preserve your measurement and campaign performance, you need to migrate your tagging to the Google & YouTube app **before** upgrading your Shopify Thank you and Order status pages.

Migrate tags first. Upgrade pages second.

Do it the other way round and your legacy tagging methods become incompatible with the new post-checkout pages. The tags break. Conversions stop reaching Google Ads. And because your store still takes orders perfectly well, nothing looks wrong until you notice your campaigns reporting a fraction of the sales you know you made.

Plenty of people will hit the upgrade button because Shopify prompts them to, without realising a prerequisite exists. That is the trap.

## What the deadline actually is

Shopify is rolling out a new checkout experience and deprecating the mechanisms merchants previously used to add Google tags, specifically `checkout.liquid` and Order status page additional scripts.

The dates split by plan. Shopify Plus merchants had until 28 August 2025. Non-Plus merchants have until 26 August 2026. If you are on Plus and this is news to you, that is a conversation to have today rather than after reading the rest of this article.

Google is direct about the consequence of missing it. If you do not migrate your Google tags and upgrade your Order status and Thank you pages by those deadlines, Shopify will impose critical limitations on stores that have not migrated, which Google says will severely affect your customer reach and the effectiveness of your campaigns and bidding strategies.

## The four setups that break

Work out which of these describes your store. Most stores are one of them, and a few are more than one.

**1. checkout.liquid or Order status page additional scripts.** The classic legacy setup. These methods are incompatible with the new post-checkout pages, so tag breakage is guaranteed rather than possible. Migrate the tags, then remove the old ones so you are not counting conversions twice.

**2. Google tags inside a Shopify custom pixel.** Google's position here is blunt. Running Google tags inside Shopify's custom pixel feature is not a supported implementation, Google cannot guarantee the behaviour of tags implemented that way, and Google support will not be able to help you fix issues arising from it. Data may still appear to flow, which is exactly what makes it dangerous.

**3. Google Tag Manager.** This is the one that catches agencies and in-house marketers who have done everything properly on every other platform. Because of Shopify platform limitations, you cannot set up Google Tag Manager through the Google & YouTube app. Google's guidance is to move your Google tags out of their Tag Manager containers running on Shopify and configure measurement directly in the app instead. If your setup depends on GTM for Google Ads or Analytics on Shopify, that architecture needs rethinking, not just migrating.

**4. An Analytics tag you have not touched since 2024.** Here is the quiet one. If you did not migrate your legacy Google Analytics tag from Shopify's Online Store then Preferences into the Google & YouTube app by 2 February 2025, Shopify converted it to a custom pixel automatically to prevent breakage. That auto-conversion means your tracking kept working, so you had no reason to investigate. It also means you are now running the unsupported setup described in point two, with degraded features and measurement.

If your reaction to this whole topic has been "we did nothing and everything still works", point four is probably you.

## How to check your setup in five minutes

Open your Shopify admin and work through this.

Check whether the Google & YouTube app is installed. If it is, open it and look at the Overview page. Google says stores with affected tags see a banner prompting them to migrate, with a Get started button. The app automatically detects which tags are affected across Google Ads, Analytics, Floodlight and Merchant Center.

Then check Settings, then Customer events, for custom pixels containing Google tags. Check Online Store, then Preferences, for a legacy Analytics field. Check your theme for `checkout.liquid` if you are on Plus, and check Settings, then Checkout, for Order status page additional scripts.

After migrating, verify rather than assume. Google Tag Assistant confirms whether your conversion tags are actually firing. A migration you have not verified is a migration you are hoping went well.

Two access notes that trip people up. The Google account linked to the app needs to be a direct administrator of the Google Ads, Analytics or Merchant Center account you are connecting. If an agency manages your accounts, you will need them involved. And the app connects only one account of each product type, so multi-account setups need manual tag handling.

### What actually breaks if you miss the date

The damage is not that your store stops working. Orders keep coming in. Customers notice nothing.

What stops is measurement. Conversions stop reaching Google Ads, which matters far more than it sounds, because Smart Bidding and Performance Max make decisions from that data. Starve them and they do not simply pause. They keep spending while optimising against an incomplete picture, which is worse than not running at all.

On top of that sits Shopify's own enforcement, the critical limitations Google references for stores that have not migrated by the deadline.

There is also a cost to leaving it late even if you do make it. Google notes that migrating early gives its AI time to learn and optimise campaigns. A tag installed on 25 August has no history behind it.

## Two things that will alarm you afterwards, and should not

**Your reported revenue may fall.** At the end of April 2025, Shopify corrected how order-level discounts are reported on the new Thank you page. Previously `subtotalPrice` did not subtract those discounts, which inflated purchase values sent to Google. It now reflects discounted subtotals accurately. If you offer order-level discounts, your reported purchase values may decrease. That is a correction, not a loss. Do not roll anything back over it.

**Some custom settings will not carry across.** In-code customisations such as privacy or feature settings may not be supported by the app because of platform restrictions, and unsupported settings are not replicated automatically. Note what you have configured before you migrate so you can tell the difference between something missing and something never carried over.

## Your plan for the next three weeks

**This week:** identify which of the four setups you are running, and whether the Google & YouTube app is installed and showing a migration banner.

**Next week:** migrate the tags. Then, and only then, upgrade the Thank you and Order status pages. Remove duplicate tags afterwards so conversions are not double-counted.

**Week three:** verify with Google Tag Assistant, compare conversion volumes against Shopify's own order count for a few days, and leave the numbers alone long enough to be real.

Handled in that order, the Shopify Google tag migration deadline is an afternoon of work. Handled backwards, or not at all, it costs you months of campaign performance.

If you are also running Shopping campaigns, note that a separate Google deadline lands eight days earlier. The [Content API for Shopping shuts down on 18 August](https://kavcomexpert.com/blog/content-api-for-shopping-shutdown-checklist), which affects product feeds rather than tags. Two different systems, two different deadlines, same month.

If you would rather not work out which of the four setups you are on, [book a call](https://kavcomexpert.com/contact-us) and we will look at it with you. This is routine **[Shopify development](/services/shopify-development)** work, but it is the kind that is much cheaper to do before a deadline than after one. Where campaigns are involved, our **[Google Ads management](/services/digital-marketing/google-ads)** team handles the measurement side, and the wider **[digital marketing](/services/digital-marketing)** picture matters here, because tracking that quietly breaks takes months of budget with it.

## FAQs

### What is the Shopify Google tag migration deadline?

Non-Plus Shopify merchants have until 26 August 2026 to migrate their Google tags to the Google & YouTube app and upgrade their Thank you and Order status pages. Shopify Plus merchants had an earlier deadline of 28 August 2025.

### What happens if I miss the 26 August deadline?

Google's documentation states that Shopify will impose critical limitations on stores that have not migrated, and that this will severely affect customer reach and the effectiveness of campaigns and bidding strategies. Separately, your conversion tracking breaks, which starves Smart Bidding and Performance Max of the data they optimise against.

### Should I migrate tags first or upgrade my pages first?

Tags first, without exception. Google states you must migrate tagging to the Google & YouTube app before upgrading the Thank you and Order status pages. Upgrading first makes legacy tagging methods incompatible with the new pages and breaks your tags.

### Can I keep using Google Tag Manager on Shopify?

Not for Google tags. Google's documentation says you cannot set up Google Tag Manager through the Google & YouTube app due to Shopify platform limitations, and recommends moving Google tags out of Tag Manager containers and configuring measurement directly in the app.

### My tracking works fine and I have not changed anything. Am I safe?

Not necessarily. If you did not migrate your legacy Google Analytics tag by 2 February 2025, Shopify automatically converted it to a custom pixel to prevent breakage. Your tracking kept working, but a custom pixel is an unsupported setup that Google says can degrade features and measurement.

### Why did my conversion value drop after migrating?

It is most likely a correction rather than a fault. Shopify fixed how order-level discounts are reported at the end of April 2025, so purchase values that were previously inflated now reflect discounted subtotals accurately. If you offer order-level discounts, expect reported values to come down.

### How do I check the migration actually worked?

Use Google Tag Assistant to confirm your conversion tags are firing correctly, then compare conversions recorded in Google Ads against your actual Shopify order count over several days. Also remove any duplicate tags left behind by the old setup, or you will count conversions twice.

### My agency manages my Google accounts. What do I need from them?

The Google account linked to the app must be a direct administrator of the Google Ads, Analytics or Merchant Center account. If you cannot get that access, Google notes you can still migrate tags without connecting the account so your measurement does not break, but you will want your agency involved to remove duplicate tags properly.
